Title:

Training Within Industry (TWI):
Implementing and Sustaining Lean through People
Workshop
Abstract:

In the Toyota Way Fieldbook, Jeffrey Liker and David Meier state, “The Toyota method for training is tried and true, and they have used it (Training Within Industry - TWI) for over 50 years.”

Learn and experience this method of training that was created in the US in the 1940’s and how it is still used at Toyota to train the people who consistently produce the highest quality vehicles in the world. An overview of the three “J” programs of Job Relations, Job Instruction, and Job Methods Improvement will demonstrate how this training contributes to the positive, collaborative work environment, how operators can be trained on how to do a job the same way and, how to allowing people to have a direct input in how to improve their job provides the foundation for continuous improvement.

Those attending will also participate in a hands-on Job Instruction (JI) session to learn-by-doing this simple yet powerful 4-step method used at Toyota since 1951 to train employees for strict adherence to standardized operations and for new employees to quickly learn the concepts of the Toyota Production System.

Specific Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will learn:

  • A clear understanding of how companies in the US, Canada and Mexico have made TWI an integral part of their Lean initiative and the impact of TWI as an integral part of Lean is having on the bottom line.
