Title:

Engaging People -By Developing a Continuous Improvement System
Presentation Abstract:

Learn how Northrop Grumman Newport News (NGNN) is engaging its people in providing more value to both their internal and external customers by deploying a Continuous Improvement System (CIS).

This process reinforces a culture of continuous improvement that drives the individual ownership of the business process to achieve increased customer satisfaction. This approach is built on the following guiding principles of People + Process = Performance is described below:

PEOPLE

  • LEADERSHIP: Leadership must be committed to achieving visible and validated improvement results through the engagement of all employees.
  • EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT: In order to maximize NGNN's potential, they must create a culture that empowers and equips each employee to recognize waste in their value streams and proactively seek improvements in their individual day-to-day operations.

PROCESS

  • VALUE STREAM THINKING: Day-to-day decisions, improvements and priorities should be aimed at maximizing value to our downstream customers.
  • RECOGNIZINGWASTE: Recognizing and eliminating waste in the value streams is a fundamental skill for every employee.
  • PRIORITIZED ACTION PLANNING: Existing, related improvement initiatives must be coordinated to maximize benefits to the value stream.

PERFORMANCE

  • DECK PLATE RESULTS: By improving the quality and timeliness of value stream products to NGNN's deck plate and shop floor work teams, they better enable their programs to meet their commitments.
  • MEASURED RESULTS: Their investments in continuous improvement must enable improved performance and ultimately return measurable business results.
